about me

Having witnessed the birth of what we now know as the World Wide Web I have over 20 years of experience designing and building digital products that people will want to use over and over.

where did it start?

Frankfurt am Main, Germany

My journey as a Digital consultant started with dkd Internet Services in Frankfurt am Main, Germany. I joined this small company as a praktikant or paid intern. DM200 a month wasn’t a lot of money, but it gave me the needed experience. Progressing in the company, I worked on various projects, mainly brochure websites; an internet presence for companies. Later on, as the company grew, I had the fortune to work with big companies like Bayer AG and Lufthansa. All in all, it gave a rock-solid foundation in designing and building websites.

It was here my passion for typography grew, the use of grids and where I wrangled Photoshop and Illustrator. I leapt into foreign languages like PHP, HTML, CSS and JS and developed my skills as a web designer.

The Irish Times

After a brief stint as a freelancer and working for an eLearning company, my big break came with Ireland.com, the online news portal for The Irish Times. It is one of Ireland’s most prominent newspapers, and I spent 17 (check) years working here. I oversaw the website development four times. These included Ireland’s first responsive news site and was an absolute game changer. The readership could now read the Irish Times on optimised pages; anywhere. Smartphones were becoming more and more proven and it was imperative that we could engage with the readership across all devices.

Working within the confines of an Enterprise Content Management system was not without its challenges, but it forced me to focus more. Highlight projects included:

  • Pages using Google AMP technology – mobile specfic design
  • The Abroad network – project to reach out to Irish diasopora
  • Restaurant Assocation of Ireland awards
  • 12 responsive email products – all focused on delivering content that looked great on all devices.

Freelancing

Building websites and designing is an addiction; freelancing is the cure. Currently, I look after all of Rowing Ireland’s graphic and web design requirements. The work spans a multitude of disciplined, right from maintaining their website to providing a digital strategy and their social media assets. As a freelancer, I am always looking for new clients. That could be you, so why not drop me a message and let’s work together.

Pestle & Mortar

Looking for a change and a better work-life balance, I joined one of Ireland’s leading skin care companies as their web and eCommerce development manager. Over two years, during a worldwide pandemic, I led a team to rebuild their eCommerce platform for both B2C and B2B markets. A state-of-the-art eCommerce website using WooCommerce with cutting-edge features was built that helped Pestle & Mortar maintain and build the products where well known for.
