Rowing Ireland relaunch

Project details

What was required

A fresh new modern design of the Rowing Ireland website that reflected the success of one of Ireland’s most successful sports.

The website, today

Project insight

The Rowing Ireland website hadn’t been redesigned since its original launch. The previous iteration relied heavily on PDF documents for the un user-friendly content. PDFs, by their sheer A4-based size, are pretty hard to read on a smartphone; pinching and zooming are the norms. They are challenging to maintain and don’t lend themselves to SEO. A better approach had to be taken.

Still using WordPress as the Content Management System (CMS), the site was given a significant mobile-first redesign. New layouts with enhanced typography following a review of the required content; new page templates were developed for WordPress using the Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) plugin.

One requirement in the original brief was to allow fine control of the site from the WordPress dashboard without requiring a developer to intercede. This has enabled the web team at Rowing Ireland to produce and maintain high-quality content optimised for all devices.

This content area on the homepage is managed by Advanced Custom Fields

Documents that are core to clubs and Rowing Ireland are still available as PDFs, but the method of adding them is now streamlined and very easy to do; once again, the ACF plugin makes light work of this.

Using the Quadmenu plugin, a much improved, information-rich meganav was designed and developed to allow easy access to all content that worked equally well on mobile and desktop devices.
